All of us at SureHope Counseling & Training Center want to wish you a very Happy Easter!
This year in our blog we have been focusing on emotion in Scripture. When examining this topic, we see powerful examples of many different emotions expressed throughout the scriptural accounts of Passion Week. Passion Week focuses on the events and experiences of the last week of Jesus Christ’s life before His death and resurrection.
Consider the following days and events of that week:
| Day | Event |
|---|---|
| Sunday | Triumphal Entry (Palm Sunday) |
| Monday | Cleansing of the Temple |
| Tuesday | Teaching and debates in the Temple |
| Wednesday | Judas arranges betrayal |
| Thursday | Last Supper, Gethsemane, arrest |
| Friday | Trial and crucifixion (Good Friday) |
| Saturday | Jesus in the tomb |
| Sunday | Resurrection (Easter) |
As we reflect on these events, think about the emotions experienced by both Jesus and those around Him.
The triumphal entry was filled with celebration as Jesus was recognized by many as the Messiah. The crowds honored Him by laying palm branches before Him and acknowledging His kingship. Yet at the same time, Jesus knew what the coming days would bring, carrying the grief and weight of what was ahead.
There was anger and righteous frustration during the cleansing of the Temple and the intense debates that followed. There was deep betrayal when Judas turned against Christ and revealed His whereabouts for money.
Then came the bittersweet moments of the Last Supper, followed by the deep agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. Soon after came the emotional and physical suffering of false accusations, trials, beatings, and ultimately the crucifixion. The pain was so severe that it literally took Christ’s breath away as He willingly gave His life for all who would believe that He is the Messiah.
For His followers, there was overwhelming hopelessness and fear as Jesus was laid in the tomb.
And then came the moment that changed everything.
The resurrection brought an emotion that has never been contained since that first Easter morning—utter joy. There was breathless running to share the incredible news that the Lord had risen:
“He is not here: for he is risen, as he said.” (Matthew 28:6)
Believers in Jesus today still carry that same joy.
Passion Week reminds us that Jesus experienced a wide range of emotions throughout His life, and especially during the final week leading to His death and resurrection. It is a powerful reminder that no matter what emotions we experience, the Lord knows and understands.
It also reminds us that sometimes we hold two emotions at once—the grief that death brings, and the hope and assurance of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
1 Corinthians 15:55–57 (KJV)
“O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
God bless,
